RIDGELAND TEEN SENTENCED FOR ARMED ROBBERY OF SONIC EMPLOYEE

Madison and Rankin Counties’ District Attorney John K. “Bubba” Bramlett announced today that Deon Luckett, Jr., 19, was sentenced to serve eighteen years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections for armed robbery. 

On January 7, 2026, officers with the Ridgeland Police Department were dispatched at around 6 a.m. to the Sonic located on Highway 51 in Ridgeland in reference to an armed robbery. The victim, who was the store manager, reported that while he was exiting the business, a man pushed back into the store and pointed a gun at him. The suspect cut the lights and surveillance off on his way to the store safe. He was unable to access the safe but ultimately took a money bag that had approximately $50 dollars in cash and exited the building. The victim then ran to his car where he was ambushed by Luckett a second time. Luckett attempted to rob him again, but the victim was able to drive away. 

Once on scene, officers located a ticket from the DMV waiting line system on the ground near where the robbery in the parking lot occurred. They retrieved the DMV surveillance and were able to develop the suspect as Deon Luckett. He had renewed his driver’s license the day before he committed the robbery. RPD investigators obtained a search warrant for Luckett’s house and located the clothes he wore during the robbery and two Sonic employee badges. They also recovered the Sonic money bag that was stolen during the robbery. 

Luckett was taken into custody at his place of employment: the Sonic in Clinton. He pled guilty in Madison County Circuit Court on July 29 to armed robbery and was sentenced to eighteen years in prison. 

District Attorney Bramlett stated, “It is obvious to me that this individual used the information he learned while working at another Sonic in the area to target the Ridgeland business. He attacked an innocent person who was simply attempting to work an honest job and earn a living. I want to thank the Ridgeland Police Department for their excellent investigatory work on this case which allowed my office to resolve it quickly.”
