June is National Safety Month: Staying Safe This Summer

As summer kicks off and families head outdoors to enjoy all that our beautiful community has to offer—including time at Ross R. Barnett Reservoir—June’s National Safety Month is a timely reminder that safety is everyone’s responsibility.

From boating and swimming to backyard barbecues and fireworks, summer should be full of fun—not preventable tragedy. As your District Attorney, I’m committed to not only holding individuals accountable who break the law but also working to prevent harm before it happens. Here are a few summer safety tips to help keep Rankin and Madison County families safe:

Boating Safety

  • Always wear a life jacket, even if you're a strong swimmer.

  • Never operate a boat under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Boating under the influence (BUI) is not only illegal—it’s deadly.

  • Follow all posted signs and wake zones at the Reservoir.

  • Make sure your boat is equipped with proper safety gear: lights, a fire extinguisher, and emergency signaling devices.

Swimming Safety

  • Swim only in designated areas—avoid secluded or unsupervised parts of the Reservoir.

  • Supervise children closely around the water, no matter their age or swimming ability.

  • Never swim alone, and avoid swimming after drinking alcohol.

General Summer Safety

  • Stay hydrated and apply sunscreen to avoid heat-related illness.

  • Keep grills, fireworks, and other flammable items away from kids and structures.

  • If you see something unsafe or suspicious, don’t hesitate to call 911.

At the Rankin & Madison County District Attorney’s Office, we’re dedicated to justice, public safety, and the well-being of our communities. Let’s work together to make this summer at the reservoir—and everywhere else—safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Stay safe,

Bubba Bramlett, District Attorney
